Open Source Getting the Job Done

Here’s something that isn’t a big secret at all. Wordpress absolutely rules. Feature rich, slick interface, awesome expandability and adaptability that makes me want to smile. Seriously, it’s a web geek’s dream come true as far as blogging, content management and about everything else go. Everything I hoped open source would come to.

This little rant is the direct result of my recent decision to add a blog to Hosting Fanatic. I had always figured on using the inherent content management capabilities of HF to add content to the site but I’ve found doing this often leads me off adding features and such to the code base instead of actually keeping the site fresh with new content. Typical geek thing I guess.

My decision for solution was made before I decided I needed the solution. WordPress has been quite a friend to me even though I hadn’t managed a blog to this point. Fairly standards compliant and search engine friendly out of the box…it really is something else. I’ve used it as CMS, blog, ezine, photo gallery, community and store. I’ve modified it for hosting companies, filmmakers, various other businesses and even my wife.

With a very minor amount of work…about 5 lines of code…I was able to integrate the entire wordpress install into the Hosting Fanatic template system using the WordPress default template. Very nice. Simply modifying the template itself is a study in simplicity also. If you can figure that out you can easily match a WordPress blog to the design of your existing web site.

Use a blog to make your site a little more personal and connect with friends or others in your industry. If you do, though, do consider WordPress as a solution. Check it out at WordPress.org
